Haven Primary School was VPM’s first project, which started in 1997. The school provides nursery and primary education which is open to all children in Korogocho’s slums.  As well as meeting educational needs, the project also provides a feeding programme and acts as a rehabilitation centre for destitute children, orphaned as a result of HIV/AIDs.

These children are identified by VPM’s Korogocho slums social workers and through counselling they are brought to Haven Primary School and taken care of by VPM. Through this work, VPM has rescued hundreds of children from scavenging on the rubbish tip, glue sniffing and substance abuse. Giving these children a better education means they have a much greater chance of avoiding poverty as they grow up to adulthood.

The school has over 300 pupils on its register, but not all are in school every day because keeping them off the streets, and away from scavenging on the rubbish dump is a challenge. The Headteacher is Miss Pheobe Amolo..

The feeding programme provides a basic lunch each day of corn porridge or maize and beans cooked together. For half our children this may be the only meal they receive in a day. We would like to provide them with more, but cannot afford it.

Needs : Our teachers are fully government qualified, and receive a small monthly allowance in place of a salary. Despite their sacrifice, even this is a struggle to raise each month.

We need contributions to maintain our feeding programme. We are hoping to build a permanent kitchen and dining room to provide a dry place for the children to eat.

We also need writing materials and educational resources.
